A Creative Refuge

Sam Cooke Recording at RCA StudiosIn the essence of Black History Month we will play music of those who have paved the way for the artist of today, and what better way to start off than playing the original King of Soul SAM COOKE.

Sam Cooke had 30 U.S top 40 hits from 1957-1964.  He also was one of the first African American performers to get involved with the business side of music making when he started a record label as well as a publishing company.  Sam Cooke was very active in the civil rights movement in the early sixties as he was tragically shot and killed in December of 1964 at the age of 33.  Before his departure from this earth he definitely left a legacy of great music which is still enjoyed by many today.  Sam Cooke’s music has been sampled by the likes of Paul McCartney to DJ Funk Master Flex which means that he lives on and will continue to live on crossing over to different genres now as he did during his era.
