WHAT’S IN YOUR HAND: ADAM CLAYTON POWELL JR. 1908-1972

tumblr_lvfmaq496N1qctv2io1_1280     Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was the first African-American elected to the New York City Council as a council representative in 1941.  He was the first African-American congressman for New York state in 1944.  15 years later he would head the powerful House Education and Labor Committee and would expand minimum wage and Medicaid, he worked for equal pay for women, and declared war on poverty.  During his time in congress he would successfully report 49 pieces of legislation which would make him one of the busiest men in congress.  These are just a few of many accomplishments that Adam Clayton Powell worked hard and fought for.

Mr. Powell was a well-known orator and in this video you will see rare footage of him in action.  I hope that you are just as inspired by this speech as I am to use What’s In Your Hand’s.

It is inspirational and encouraging to know that we possess so much power by using “what is in our hands”. Thank you for the reminder!
